Locating Location Data in a Disaster
Response and recovery during a disaster is the time when all plans are tested to their fullest. Whilst preparation is essential, new challenges and scenarios are always presented when our plans are brought to action. This is no-less true for the behind-the-scenes work managing spatial data during a disaster. During TC Jasper and the post crossing flooding, the Cairns Local Disaster Coordination Centre was activated. Training, planning and preparation were tested. Data sources expected to be relied on were lost whilst new sources and systems requiring live integration became available. Delivering this data into an easy to use and spatially enabled platform was critical in enabling decision-makers at the LDCC and Council in responding to the flooding event and aiding the community through recovery.
