Mapping Palaeolandscapes in the Torres Strait and Predictive modelling for their archaeological potential

The submerged landscapes of northeast Australia have the potential to fill gaps in understanding the arrival of people on mainland Australia. In our December Map Chat, Georgina will discuss a new methodological approach developed to investigate the geomorphological impacts of sea-level rise on former terrestrial landscapes, and cultural implications of those impacts in the Torres Strait region. This region, once a land bridge connecting Australia and New Guinea, is a crucial research area and has potential to shed light on current gaps in the archaeological record. Investigating submerged landscapes poses logistical and methodological challenges. Georgina will discuss her methodological approach which draws on existing digital elevation modelling to map palaeolandscape features in the study area using QGIS, then models for the archaeological potential of these palaeolandscapes using the statistical program R.
